Christianity and personality type

I asked many questions and went to more extremes in thoughts and ideas before I surrendered and went back to church. It was as if I was projecting the inner need I had for God into judging others through extreme ideals. I had made my ideals my rock but now God is my rock.

I am a Qualified MBTI Practitioner, and after surrendering to the Lord, I wondered if I should forget everything I learned about the MBTI, because personality type theory originated from a non-Christian (Carl Jung).

Despite the fact that psychology is a godless discipline and Jung wasn’t Christian, that doesn’t mean God can’t use it for His glory. He can use anything He wants—human wisdom, half-truths, lies, and anything else the enemy might spin off. He is sovereign and all-powerful over everything. Even products of the occult can be transformed by the Lord for His purposes and glory. One author said the difference between truth and error is not a gap but a razors edge. God can extract the truth for His work and use it to His glory, and He did this through the Christian woman Isabel Myers when she constructed her Myers-Briggs test.

Myers title for her book on personality types, Gifts Differing, was taken from the Bible: “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…” (Romans 12:6). This passage is about spiritual gifts. In addition to personality type indicators, many churches have tests for spiritual gifts. Those gifts and personality types may look worldly until God transforms you and He begins to show you their true meaning and application for the glory of His kingdom. Therefore, my years of studying personality type are not wasted because God will use my human knowledge for His glory.

Jung also studied dream interpretation and recorded many dream symbol definitions. God uses our dreams to speak to us. When we interpret dreams we may even use some of the theories and symbol definitions that Jung discovered, but that doesn’t make our interpretation something from the enemy. Lastly, we can determine our personality type and spiritual gifts, but that doesn’t mean God can’t call us in a completely different direction. God may call us in a direction the very opposite of our personality type or spiritual gifts.
